Federal IRS Record Retention Mandate
Under IRS Internal Revenue Code Section 6107, registered tax preparers are legally required to retain copies of completed tax returns (such as Form 1040) for a minimum of 3 years. Therefore, tax returns filed with the government cannot be deleted immediately upon request and will be archived until the 3-year retention window expires.
